I am from Australia and it is very common to have sausage rolls and meat pies. Do you have any recipes for a Vegan ‘meat’ pie or sausage roll? I love this vegan ‘chic n cheese’ pie that I can get from a vegan shop in the city, but being so far out I would love to be able to make my own.

Vegan ‘Sausage’ roll

200g firm Tofu
two tablespoons of oil
1 onion
1 cup of breadcrumbs
1 cup of minute oats
1 carrot and 1 zucchini grated
1 teaspoon of mixed herbs or spices
1 tablespoon of chopped parsley
1 tablespoon of Soy sauce
Puff Pastry (3 sheets)
cook in 200 degree oven for about 20 minutes

or equivalent of 2 eggs for binding instead of oil
hardly fat free though…

I’m from Louisiana, too, Susan. Have you never had a Natchitoches meat pie?

I think Textured Vegetable Protein (which I can only find at Kroger, but I’m in cenla and not around any Whole Foods type of places) would probably be a good substitute, since the texture is the same as ground meat and the TVP itself would absorb whatever flavors you season it with. I think if you use enough Liquid Smoke, Worcestire, and cajun seasoning, it’d make a pretty decent sub.

As for the flaky crust, I have no idea. I’m sure you could come up with something. :]

You know, I’ve never had one of those either! But I wonder if puff pastry would work. It wouldn’t be fat-free but would be vegan.

Puff pastry would definitely work. My parents have recently become fat-free vegans due to health issues and they’re pretty bummed out about the food. It’s a good thing I’m a Foodie because they would eat nothing but lentils and corn if not for me! Haha. I’m trying to figure out a way to make a meatpie recipe work, though, without the puff pastry. I’ve got the meat figured out, but I have no idea where to begin with the crust.

Worcestire isn’t a vegan food. I believe it contains anchovies. (sorry if more than one comment was entered. my connection got lost.)

Hi Leslie, there is actually vegan Worcestershire sauce, though it can be hard to find. Angostura used to make one, and one of the health food brands has one. (I’m not sure what recipe your comment was regarding.)

I have some soy curls languishing in my freezer because I dont know what to do with them! You mentioned E’s chick’n soup. I searched and couldn’t find anything. Can you help?
