Congratulations!

Congratulations to everyone who entered for making the contest so difficult to judge that it took us all day! Honestly, all of the entries were so good that every single one of them was in the lead at one time or another. They each had qualities that we liked, so narrowing it down to one was almost impossible.
In the end, it was one little ingredient that pushed Kristine's Thai Lentil Croquettes into first place. We loved the combination of quinoa and red lentils, but the addition of the sea vegetable hijiki, to replace the "fishy" taste of the original recipe, was the clincher. We look forward to testing the recipe soon. Actually, we're planning on trying several of the recipes soon!
Thank you all for sharing your creativity. I would give you all a prize if I could!

Congrats to Kristine. I loved each and every one of the entries.
Not that her recipe doesn't sound good, but I felt the results were unfair. Although I did not enter the contest myself, I think its unfair for someone who didn't even follow the rules to win the contest. You required a photo, and this entry had no photo. Other people who entered to ok the time to take photos, (buying the film and getting it developed in some cases). So next time if the photo isn't going to be *required* in order to win, then it seems you should let people know before they go through the trouble.
Thanks for the contest though. And I dont mean to be rude, it just doesn't seem right.
first off, amazingly awesome site.
not to be picky, but that image does not picture hijiki -- looks more like wakame. they are drastically different.
i also had a question: how did you judge the contest if you didnt try the recipes? you mention in this post you look forward to trying them!
There were so many gorgeous entries and I thought a photo was required...?
I couldn't possibly pick a favorite personally so I didn't envy you the job at all. I can't wait to try some of these out!
Wow, some of you readers out there are harsh! FFVK posts a fun, free contest - with a cool prize no less! - and you complain about the rules, trash the judging, and shame your fellow readers. Lighten up!
Congrats to the winner and all of the entrants for your hard work. I'll be happy to share these recipes with my non-vegan, croquette-loving friends.
Suganya, thanks for your wonderful entry, as well as your gracious comment. I love your blog and am looking forward to Vegan Ventures.
Sarah, I should have made it clear in the instructions that photos were recommended but not required. When I've held events in the past, I haven't required photos. Since this was a contest, I should have made the rules clearer.
Actually, when judging the recipes, we made it a point not to consider the photos. There were some photos that were so beautiful that they would have won easily if this were a photography contest. We tried to judge the recipes on their own merits, so everyone had equal consideration.
Threehz, you're right--that's wakame. I didn't have any hijiki, so when I set up this photo, I subbed wakame. If you'll notice, the photo is called "Lentils, Quinoa, and Wakame," so I wasn't trying to deceive anyone.
As I mentioned in the contest "rules," my husband and I picked the "one we'd most like to eat." If we'd had to make all of the recipes, it would have taken weeks for us to pick a winner. Well, as it turned out, we wanted to eat all of them! Choosing one was very difficult, but in the end, we picked the one we both could agree on.
Ashley, if I ever do this again, I'm picking a panel of judges! It's too much stress for one couple to take!
Joanne, thanks for your kind words. I hope that all the entrants look upon this as a good experience. I figure that their blogs (or recipes) got exposure, and my readers got 17 new recipes to try. It should be a win-win situation for everyone.
It's been a long couple of days, so I'm headed off to bed, hopefully NOT to dream of croquettes, as I did last night!
joanne - I did not trash the judging or shame my fellow readers? I simply pointed out an inaccuracy in the rules of the contest. It was not clear in the rules that a photo wasn't required. I think, personally, that the photo itself is proof that you ACTUALLY MADE the recipe. You know what I mean?
susanv - I didn't mean to create a controversy I just wanted to point it out so that when you next time (hopefully!) have a contest, it will be more clearly stated.
Also- I really love this food blog. The vast majority of the recipes I use come from here! But one thing i especially love are the pictures. Seeing the recipes really help me get a feel for how they will taste and whether I'm in the mood for them or not.
Anyway, thanks Susan for hosting such a good contest and the best food blog i've seen on the net!
Congrats to Kristine! This was so much fun! We should do this again :-)
It really wasn't clear in the contest rules that photos weren't required. It said:
2. Post your recipe WITH PHOTOS to your blog (or email them to the address in the sidebar) with a link back to this post by midnight November 11.
Nowhere did it say a photo was optional, though later you included an entry without a photo and I was surprised.
If I had known that the photos had absolutely no value in this contest, I probably wouldn't have gone out in the rain to get mine developed. I didn't expect to win, but I think myself and a lot of other people took time to take photos. It's just a bummer to find out that didn't even matter.
And, how do you even know if someone even made their recipe if you didn't see a photo?
I think it's great you took the time to do a contest and I really thank you for doing that. I think it's great you have a blog that takes veganism to the mainstream and inspires people to work veganism into their lives. I love your blog and have been a faithful reader for over a year.
And I don't think any of the comments here have been harsh at all.
And I would like to say congratulations to the winner, that DOES sound like an awesome recipe.
Oh Gosh
Thank you to all for your kind words, I was excited to have won. The reason I had no photo is because...I don't have a camera. My parter and I are recent gradates so after student loan payements, and groceries, our top priority isn't a camera. I didn't mean to cause so much controversey. Really.
I'm terribly sorry...
Kristine
If you don't have a camera, you can use a disposable camera that costs about $5, and when you get the photos developed, don't order prints, just get them developed only and get a photo cd, that costs about $5 (or less, if you just take a few photos on the camera and don't use up all the exposures, usually photo CDs are priced per-negative scan).
But I understand about costs, I'm really broke too, my digital camera broke (hence having to use my film camera) and I don't have the money to replace it.
Don't feel sorry, you had the best recipe and deserved to win! I probably shouldn't have said anything, I was just unclear about the rules. I think the best recipe won and that's the important thing. I'm sorry to have caused anything, I really didn't mean to.
Talula_fairie, I'm sorry I didn't specify that I'd accept recipes without photos, too. I hate to think of you running out in the rain to get yours developed. However, I have to say that your photos were so gorgeous that I would never say they "didn't matter." They really complemented your recipe, and this blog was more beautiful because of your photo. I think they made a lot of people happy, and you should be very proud of them, as well as your recipe.
Congrats Kristine & thank you, Susan. Lots of fun. Hope to play again - with our without a prize!

PS - I hate sea veggies alone, so this recipe may help me sneak some into my diet, LOL.
My goodness, all those croquettes look fabulous! Congratulations to you winning VegNews Favorite Veg Blog -- a well deserved honor! :)
wishing a big congratulations to Kristine - fabulous recipe, as were all the other recipes submitted!!
Susan, that photo of the lentils, quinoa and seaweed is gorgeous!
Congrats to Kristine for winning the contest--her recipe looks great!
Courtney
I thought I had read somewhere (because I saw a really cool recipe with hijiki that I had wanted to try once, and, so, looked it up) that hijiki had a certain amount of arsenic in it. Do you think this is true, and, if so, does that affect your wanting to try it?
Perhaps you've had hijiki before, and my own personal fears are unfounded?
That's a good question, Marga. In theory, I have no problem using a little bit of it every now and then. Usually the amount in recipes is inside the safe limit. But in practice, I usually substitute other sea vegetables whenever hijiki is called for. As you can see from the photo, wakame was the closest thing I had in the house.
