Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone. I certainly hope your 2008 is going better than mine. We woke up this morning to find that our heater and other large appliances weren't working. Looks like we're going to need an expensive new breaker box which we won't be able to get until tomorrow at the earliest. So until then....brrrr, it's cold, even in Mississippi, where the overnight low is expected to hit 25 F. Even more distressing, my stove isn't working so I haven't been able to make our traditional good-luck black-eyed peas. Soon I'm going to check and see if our camp stove can handle a pressure cooker. What we don't need this year is any more bad luck!

But you don't want to hear about that. I'm sure you're more interested in learning the winner of the copy of My Sweet Vegan. Every time I run one of these contests I end up feeling guilty that I can't give everyone who entered a prize; I'd love to play talk show host and announce that everyone in our studio audience is getting a copy, but I'm afraid that our family budget just won't allow that. So we had to draw one winner, and as usual I let E. do the honors. And the winner is...

And the winner is...DIANE!

...Diane (aleka333)! Diane says she's never commented before, but see what good things happen when you come out of lurkdom? After taking out duplicate comments (so that everyone had an equal chance), there were 131 contenders*, and like I said, I wish I had a book for every one of you. But don't despair--I have more giveaways planned for the new few weeks, so keep checking in.

Also, if you live in the Fairfield, Connecticut, area, you're in luck: Hannah will be signing books and bringing sample baked goods to three locations. Here's her schedule:

January 5 - 2pm - Barnes & Noble
January 12 - 2pm - Kitchen Corner
February 2 - TBA - Borders

Those of you in other countries who were hoping to win the book because it's not available in your stores might be interested in knowing that Amazon, Vegan Essentials and Cosmos Vegan Shoppe all are selling the book and will ship it worldwide. With the current state of the US dollar, you may even be getting a bargain!

Thanks to everyone who commented. I love hearing from you (even if I have to kind of bribe you into it!) I wish you all a healthy, happy, peaceful new year!

I love your food, I have made many of your recipes. This is my first time commenting though because you have so many I always think you can not possibly read them all and will never get to mine.

Kate, I really do read every comment and treasure every one. (Well, except the one from the guy who accused me of having an eating disorder!) I wish I had time to reply to every comment, but I only have time to answer questions. Please leave a comment any time you feel the urge. :)

I love it and read it and promise to comment more :)

Hi, Susan. I sincerely hope that you get your appliances up and running soon, and that you can keep warm. If it was 25F here right now, I'd be in shorts and a T-shirt. It is -15 deg. C (5 deg. F) here right now.

Hi Susan, thank you & your daughter again for making my day! I'm so sorry for your appliance hassles this week. Stay warm & I hope it all works out soon.

Regarding commenting, I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I couldn't figure out how to do it at first! I kept looking for an 'add comment' link on the email & only found it when I went to your full website. Oh well, now I know! lol

Since I didn't comment on it at the time, your North African Kale Soup made my husband and I instant lovers of kale. we'd always been a little afraid of it. :)

Hi Susan!

See, you don't have to bribe me! I read your blog almost every day and its been a wonderful source of inspiration for me. I also have an "E" who is my official taste tester and chief critic, and who has recently decided to go vegan. So, even though I've been reading your blog almost from the beginning, I rely on it much more now that we are trying to make a permanent switch to vegan, though we have had a couple of "slips..."

Just an FYI - I made the gingerbread Biscotti -- they came out perfect... Of course, I was not adventurous enough to try gluten-free... :-)

I am a lurker, but have made many things from this blog and have recommended it to many other folks... thanks for all the great ideas and recipes!

Wishing you the best in 08!

Shucks! I forgot the black eyed peas tradition thingy. I swore last year that I was going to do it this year, but totally blanked! Do lentils count?

Sorry to hear about your power issues-I bet it was so cold, but will make for a good story down the line. Did you sleep in layers of sweatshirts and socks?!

Hi Susan, I'm sorry it's taken me so long to read the review, but it's so exciting to see your gorgeous renditions of my recipes! Thank you so much for checking out the book, even if it isn't quite your bag. I really appreciate the fact that you would take the time to do a write up and even raffle your copy off- I sure hope that the new recipient enjoys it as well!

Happy New Year, by the way!
