Catching Up

For those of you who haven't been following my Twitter posts, it may come as a surprise to you that I've been away on vacation for the last 8 days. Since I write this blog under my real name and location, I'm uncomfortable announcing when I'm going to be away from home, so I deviously contrived to send that Turkish Pilaf recipe while I was vacationing in Arizona. Sorry for the subterfuge!
Anyway, I hope to have a whole big "Traveling Vegan in Arizona" type of post for you in a few days and a few more travel photos posted to my Flickr account, but for now I have a huge number of jobs to get done around the house, the first of which is getting some food into it. We sent all our fruits and vegetables over to our neighbor before we left town, so last night I made do with pasta and frozen vegetables. It may take half the day to get our fridge and pantry up to their standard overloaded conditions, and I'll get right on that as soon as E wakes up. Yes, it's 10:55 and she's still sleeping--that's how exhausting this vacation was for all of us. We were in a different town almost every night, and when we weren't driving, we were hiking. Home never looked so good!
While I've got you here, I want to let you know about something very important that's going on. Several thoughtful bloggers have gotten together to organize a fund raiser for Briana Brownlow, who is battling Stage IV cancer and would like to explore alternative treatment options, not just the ones her insurance will cover. If you would like to help, please visit Jugalbandi, scroll down and read the full story, check out the wonderful raffle prizes being offered, and make a contribution. On that page you can also find out how to enter a photo into the monthly Click photo contest for a chance to win two prizes. Please help if you can!

By far the most effective "alternative" treatment for cancer (including advanced breast cancer) is low dose naltrexone. It is very inexpensive, about $20 a month. Coley's toxins might be worth looking into as well, but I don't know if they're available in the States. Both are forms of immunotherapy.
Almost all other "alternative" cancer treatments are quackery. Some supplements may help, but at this stage are unlikely to do more than perhaps give her a little more time.
Sorry for this very pragmatical message, but I am a medical writer and I have extensive knowledge about oncology (and pharmacology, immunology and many other things). It makes me angry to hear about people with advanced cancer, but I am also angered when hearing about loads of money being wasted on things like laetrile and coffee enemas.
(Good to see you back, and I enjoyed looking at the photos!)
I hope you had a great time in Arizona -- one of my favorite places! If I recall correctly, you were going to stop in Sedona. Beautiful there, isn't it?
I hope you were able to find enough food options.

Hi - I'm new to blogging, and I love your site! My mom used to live in Arizona, and as a family, we've been discussing taking a trip there sometime in the near future. Is it easy to eat vegan there?
That is really touching that people are coming together to support Briana. My aunt recently passed away because of cancer. It is really a shame that insurance companies do not cover alternative health products. My whole family takes supplements regularly, and all of expenses come out of our pocket. I can only imagine what it must be like for Briana.

I would love it if you could chronicle how you stock your pantry and kitchen. I need help, help, help. My husband is gluten AND lactose intolerant (sp?). I have a 14 year old daughter, her and I could be vegan, and a 11 year old son, he and my husband would like to eat bacon and fries every night. So, I am in such a mess with my cooking. I do get great inspiration from your blog. Thanks.
Hey!
I just moved from Arizona. Did you get to go to "Green" on Scottsdale Rd just north of Tempe? Or I Am The Center in Tempe? They have fantastic vegan menus. And oh goodness, the desserts.
Please say you went to Green for at least one of your meals!
My Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer when I was 13. He went to 3 different doctors that all confirmed the cancer and said he should have the tumor removed and then have chemo/radiation. He decided against it. Instead our whole family went on a very strict vegan-ish diet. It was vegan, but we also cut out all sugar and salt, and we did not eay any processed foods or foods with preservatives. Along with the diet he took a few supplements recommended by Halleluiah Acres.
His tumor once, bigger than the size of a golf ball, completely disappeared.
I am now 27 and my Dad is still around and still healthy. We only followed the diet so strictly for about 3 years and then resumed a more normal diet, but maybe your friend could at least visit the Halleluiah Acres website and see if she likes any of their suggestions.

(sorry I don't have a blog or I would post it on here)
I have lived in AZ my entire life and I love it. SEdona is just too awesome for words. I go there every chance I get. (I'm a 'Snotts'dalian')(Scottsdale)
I love your blog and check for updates daily.. Thank you for the inspiration. What made me post though, was when I clicked on your blog today, the first thing I see is an add for Domino's pizza... "Order the Brooklyn".. and says Don't Leave off the XL Pepperoni. I understand that you can only get revenue from ads, which I completely support, but I thought this was rather ironic..
and gross.
Ack! I just saw one for G*rton's fish and for Pizza H#t pasta (Meaty Marinara or Chicken Alfredo). Obviously something has gone wrong with my ads, and I've sent a message to BlogHer asking about it. Thanks to everyone who has pointed them out to me; I don't always see them when they first appear so it's good to have an early heads-up.
I often do the same thing. I don't always announce my travels on my blog until they're completed. Of course, it just depends, though. Sometimes I do :)
That looks so good!
Susan,
Thank you for your support. It really means a lot to us.

I hope you were able to find some vegan treats here is Arizona. I live in Prescott and there are only 2 really vegan friendly restaurants, all other places you have to remove things. Sedona has some great places as does Phoenix. I hope you had a great trip through my beautiful state!
Great photos of Sedona! I went there last September but my lame-o coworker wanted to leave after 15 minutes. And we drove for 2 hours just to get there from our hotel.
Those Anasazi buildings look so incredible. Looks like a fun excursion!
